The eye behind Focalis-X

Focalis-X is our analysis layer — vision AI combined with an evaluation grid built for photographers (50+ composition, technique, lighting criteria). Output: a score out of 100, three prioritized growth angles, and coaching that speaks French.

Three passes, not one

1. 01

   Compositional reading

   Rule of thirds, leading lines, visual balance, negative space, vanishing point. Focalis-X maps where your eye is supposed to go and compares that to where it actually goes.

2. 02

   Technical audit

   Exposure, focus, white balance, digital noise, dynamic range. EXIF reading when available, visual estimation otherwise.

3. 03

   Coaching synthesis

   Not just faults, but 3 prioritized growth angles phrased the way a human coach would: "try getting down to eye level" instead of "suboptimal angle".

Your language, not a translation

Focalis-X produces your analysis directly in French or English based on your choice — more languages will follow. Not an English analysis translated afterward: the photographic vocabulary native to each language is used as photographers actually use it.

What we don't do with your photos

• No model training

  Your images serve to analyze your photo, not to teach a future model.

• No data resale

  No third-party sharing for advertising purposes.

• No indefinite storage on the free plan

  Analyses and images wiped after 30 days.

• No unsolicited generative AI

  If Focalis ever generates a before/after preview (in development), it'll be explicitly triggered by a click — never in the background.

Privacy, without superlatives

Encrypted storage in transit and at rest, right-to-erasure built into the dashboard, no third-party advertising cookies. Our analytics (PostHog, Vercel Analytics) are for internal measurement only — never resold, never shared.

The problem with roast

Critique that mocks does nothing. It confirms a vague intuition — "my photo isn't great" — without saying why. The photographer walks away with a small humiliation, a second of validation, and zero angle for the next shot. Next month, they'll make the same mistake, and they'll mock themselves the same way.

What makes a photographer grow is the opposite: feedback that breaks things down, prioritizes them, and proposes an action. "Your subject is centered and the background is busy. Shift your framing to the right, drop 30 cm to align the trees behind the head, and the photo gains two levels." Boring. Precise. Actionable.

What we're building

Focalis isn't designed to be funny, shareable on Twitter, or viral. It's designed to be useful on the fifth analysis, the fiftieth, and the five-hundredth. The score out of 100 isn't a trophy, it's a starting point. The 3 tips that follow are the real value — and they change with every photo, based on what you actually tried to do.

Who this isn't for

If you want to be told your photo is bad and have a quip thrown at you with it, Focalis isn't the right tool. Others exist for that, they're there for that, and they do it well.
